Coping with Tragedy: Remembering God's Promises

Hi there! If you’ve been along for this blog series, you know we are right in the middle of learning how to cope well with tragedy. If you missed the first two posts, I’ll put the links at the end for you. Today we’re focusing on God’s promises. I realize that some of you reading this are dealing with your own personal tragedy or crisis. May you be strengthened by God’s Word to you today.

God’s promises are oxygen when life is suffocating us. We must breathe in his Word until it penetrates every cell of our being. We can do nothing apart from God, so if we don’t let him breathe life into us throughout our crisis, a part of us will die. Hope, courage, strength and joy will be among the fatalities. The loss of these beauties is the real tragedy. So as people of God who want to be strength and light in a fragile and dark world, let’s nestle ourselves deep into God’s promises so that beauty will arise.

The Bible is so full of God’s promises, that it really isn’t possible to count them. And here is the exciting news, “No matter how many promises God has made, they are ‘Yes’ in Christ” (2 Corinthians 1:20). This means that as God’s Chosen and Crowned child, you can put on the oxygen mask of God’s promises and walk boldly through the fire of whatever trial is trying to consume you. The path may be extra smokey at times, making it hard to see your next step. You may stumble or have to fight your way through some obstacles, but hear me when I tell you…you will not be consumed. With God by your side, you will emerge a beauty from the ashes. Do you believe that?

Let’s look at just a few promises you can breathe in as you face your day today:

God is your ever-present help in time of need. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth give way. God is within her (you!), she will not fall” (Psalm 46).

God brings overwhelming good out of overwhelming bad. “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).

God goes before you and surrounds you as a shield. “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:8).

Your present suffering pales in comparison to your future glory. “I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

He will uphold and strengthen you. “I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my victorious right hand” (Isaiah 41:10).

God will rebuild and restore. He makes everything beautiful in its time. Read Isaiah 61 in its entirety this week. Through Jesus, the promises of this passage are available to you.

Dear friend, let your heavenly Father love on you today. Breathe in his promises until you feel the spark of strength return. God is faithful and a hundred percent trustworthy. Let him ignite you with hope. Remember, you are his Chosen and Crowned.
