Anna's Words on the Upcoming Election

Did you know that only about 1 out of 4 women vote? I used to be in that 75% who stayed home on election day. Why? I was a mom of three small children, and frankly, I was more focused on making it to the end of the day with my sanity intact and my kids in one piece than I was on researching the candidates and their political platforms.

But this election I can’t afford to stay home, and if you’re a Christian mom, neither can you.

There is too much at stake. You and I need to know what God has to say on the issues and yield ourselves to his authority. So often we expect God to yield to our changing culture, but the Bible clearly says that God is the same yesterday, today and forever (Hebrews 13:8). His word does not change. Christian mom, we have an obligation to engage in politics and uphold the authority of God over our nation. Blessing will come from honoring him above ourselves. Judgement will come if we get that backwards.

So what do we do with these two less-than-ideal candidates that stand before us? They both disgust me. Neither of them is a role model for my children. Should I vote for a third party or write someone in? No, that doesn’t seem like a wise decision. So what do I do? Well, I look to where they stand on key issues and to the political platform each represents. Our next president will likely appoint up to four judges to the Supreme Court which will change the landscape of the present court. The Supreme Court is primed for a strong shift in either the conservative or liberal direction, says Brookings research director Benjamin Wittes.

Which candidate and platform best aligns with God’s unchanging standards? Which best protects life from conception to natural death? Which one upholds God’s definition of marriage which is the union of one man and one woman? Which fights for the protection of Israel and for our freedom to live as Christians at home, at work and in the community? These are the key issues.

But what about healthcare, jobs and the economy, you ask?

Jesus says, “Do not worry…for the pagans pursue all these things, and your Heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:31-33). If we want to see the kingdom of God on this earth, we must vote for kingdom laws and principles. Jesus promised that if we seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, God will see to it that everything else we need will be given to us.

Christian mom, let your voice be heard. You have the opportunity to affect great change for our country. Be informed. Pray for God’s wisdom to direct your vote. Then go out and vote knowing that whatever the outcome, God is still ultimately the one in power. This election won’t knock him off his throne or tie his hands together. We need not fear if our candidate doesn’t win, and we cannot think the battle has been won if our candidate comes out victorious. We, the church of Jesus Christ, must keep running the great race of faith until Jesus returns or God calls us home. Press on, Chosen and Crowned child of God, and take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of you (Philippians 3:12).
