The One Prayer Your Child Needs You To Pray

The One Prayer Your Child Needs You To Pray

If there was only one thing you could pray for your children as they begin a new school year, what would it be? Would it be their safety? Friendships? Academics? Behavior? If you have preteens in your house like I do, would it be that they not roll their eyes at the teacher?

With so many cares and concerns to pray over, the most important place we can start is praying for our children’s hearts.  Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” Everything flows from it. Their faith. Their character. Their choices. Their responses. Their eternal security. Everything.

Each day this week, you will read a faith-inspiring story from a mom just like you who is battling in prayer for her child’s heart. At the end of her story, she will provide you with a powerful scripture prayer that you can pray over your own children. Know that as you pray, you are joining moms all across the country in the same prayer. Jesus says that “where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them" (Matthew 18:20). Jesus is with you and hears the cries of your heart! The Bible is clear, too, that the prayers of a righteous person are powerful and effective (James 5:16). Mom friend, if you have given your heart to Jesus, you have been declared righteous! So pray! Your prayers are powerful and effective. You are joining God in his work to capture your child’s heart for Christ!

Now #MomArmy15, let’s pray like our kid’s lives depend on it! You may use the scripture prayer below and insert your child’s name when you see a blank. Or feel free to use other scriptures God has placed on your heart. We would love it if you typed at least one sentence of your prayer in the comments section or left a comment that shares your heart with us. We love you!

God, thank you for loving ________ so much that you gave your one and only Son, Jesus, that when ________ believes in Him, ________ will not die but will have eternal life (John 3:16). Your Word says that no one can come to you unless you draw them (John 6:44). So today, draw ________’s heart to yourself as he wakes from his sleep, as he goes about his school day and after-school activities, and as he sleeps again tonight. Give him eyes to see you and ears to hear you. Keep working and fertilizing the soil of his heart so that the soil will nourish the seeds of your Word and grow into branches that bear the fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness and self-control (Matthew 13:16-23, Galatians 5:22-23).

God, you are the Creator of ________’s heart and I hold onto the promise that you will fulfill your purpose for ________, that your love endures forever, and that you will never abandon the works of your hands (Psalm 138:8). Make _________’s heart like yours. Fill ________ with the knowledge of your will and let him grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:18). I pray that ________ will put his trust in you and never be shaken (Psalm 125:1).

And God, help me to be the mom you called me to be. Give me the wisdom, knowledge and understanding I need to train up this precious child in the way he should go so that when he is old, he will not turn away from it (Proverbs 22:6). Thank you that you are with me, helping me every step of the way. Pour out your grace on me today for your grace is sufficient for me. Your power is made perfect through my weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Be glorified in me today, God. In Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.

My prayer is that our children would ultimately come to own their faith and grow in their relationship with Christ; to love God, love themselves, and love others well. In Jesus name!
