WIFEY WEDNESDAY: How To Begin Praying With Your Husband

So last Wednesday (12-10-14) I asked you to keep a thought/prayer on the back burner of your mind. That thought was to set a goal in the new year to start praying with your husband. If you haven’t read my post, I encourage you to do so as it outlines some pretty convincing reasons why this is a great goal for you and your hubby! Start talking to your husband about it now. Share your real thoughts, fears and concerns with one another. After talking and praying separately about it, I pray that together, you and your husband will decide to go for it!

Today I want to talk about how to begin. Praying with your spouse can feel so awkward at first, but couples who have prayed together for years say it’s just like anything else that is new. The more you do it, the more natural it becomes. Here are some tips couples have shared with me on how to begin:

1. Start small. Your prayers can be short, one-sentence prayers. Ask your spouse how you can pray for him. Or each of you can make a list of a few things you’d like the other to pray with you about over the coming week. Keep your prayer time short.

2. Set a time each day and stick to it! Having a regular set time to pray together increases your chances of staying committed to your goal. Hold each other accountable and speak up if one of you allows busyness to steal your prayer time.

3. Don’t give up! If you fall away from your commitment, don’t throw in the towel. Start again right away. It is worth it to persevere in the discipline of daily prayer time together.

4. Use a couple’s devotional as a launching pad for meaningful prayers. My husband and I are currently reading, “Night Light: A Devotional for Couples” by James and Shirley Dobson. The book helps give our time together some structure with a scripture, application, discussion question, and prayer. It only takes about 10 minutes, so we can easily fit it in before bed.

5. In your prayer time, talk about your struggles with praying together. Bring them to God and ask Him to help you. You can be sure of this, God wants you and your husband to pray together and He will help you be successful! Don’t try to achieve this goal on your own. Our flesh is so weak, but our God is so strong!

What do you think, wifey friend? Is this do-able? I’d love to know if you and your husband are going to go for it! My husband and I are just taking our first few shaky steps of praying together and we haven’t crashed yet! I am certain of this: that He who began a good work in us will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Phil. 1:6)! Let’s take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of us (Phil. 3:12)!

I’ll be taking some time off of writing next week as I’ll be spending many precious hours celebrating Christmas with my family, but I will pick right back up where we left off as the New Year approaches! Merry Christmas!

If today’s post blessed you, please share it with a friend or on social media. By doing so, you help spread the truths of God’s Word and the impact of Chosen and Crowned Ministries. Thank you!
